David Greene, former host of NPR’s Morning Edition, has filed a lawsuit accusing Google of using his voice to train its AI audio tool without permission.
Greene says he became aware of the issue after friends asked whether he had licensed his voice to the company’s NotebookLM feature, which generates podcast-style audio summaries with distinct male and female AI voices. The tool was also used by Spotify last year for episodes tied to users’ “Spotify Wrapped” summaries.
Google denies the allegations, stating that the voice used in the feature belongs to a paid professional voice actor.
The case adds to growing legal scrutiny around AI-generated voices and ownership of vocal identity.
