Egypt Launches First National Biometric Verification Platform

February 16 — Cairo: Egypt has introduced its first unified national biometric verification platform, with the launch of a new mobile application called MOIEG-PASS, according to the Ministry of Interior.

The application is currently available on Google Play for Android users as part of a pilot phase. The ministry described the platform as a major step toward enhancing the security of personal information and safeguarding online transactions.

The system uses facial recognition technology developed by Egyptian engineers and designed in accordance with international technical standards, the ministry said.

According to information provided within the app, users who wish to access Interior Ministry services online will need to verify their identity by scanning their national ID card and completing a facial recognition process. Registration requires citizens to provide their mobile phone number along with their national ID details.

The platform offers several functions, including identity authentication, monitoring the status of official requests, and receiving notifications related to government services. However, the ministry has not yet specified which digital government services will be fully integrated into the system.

Officials said the launch is part of ongoing efforts to modernize the ministry’s digital infrastructure and support Egypt’s broader digital transformation strategy. This includes incorporating advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence to improve the efficiency of electronic government services.

In recent years, Egypt has expanded the availability of online public services and invested in digitization initiatives. Currently, the Interior Ministry’s online portal provides services such as issuing official birth and death certificates, checking traffic violations, and scheduling appointments at traffic departments.
