New Regulations Restrict Billboard Lighting Hours on Egypt’s Roads

Egyptian authorities have introduced new regulations to control billboard lighting hours across roads and major highways as part of wider efforts to reduce energy consumption and improve road safety.

Under the new measures, illuminated advertising billboards will face restrictions on operating hours during late-night periods, with authorities aiming to limit unnecessary electricity use while reducing visual distractions for drivers.

Officials stated that the regulations apply to billboards installed on main roads, highways, bridges, and public spaces, particularly in high-traffic areas across Greater Cairo and other governorates.

The decision forms part of broader government efforts focused on energy efficiency and public infrastructure management amid increasing national attention on electricity consumption and urban planning standards.

Authorities also highlighted safety concerns linked to excessive billboard lighting, noting that overly bright advertisements and digital screens can affect driver concentration and visibility, especially during nighttime driving.

Implementation and monitoring of the new rules are expected to involve coordination between local authorities, road management agencies, and advertising companies to ensure compliance with updated operating schedules.

The move reflects Egypt’s ongoing efforts to regulate outdoor advertising while balancing commercial activity with environmental, urban, and public safety considerations.
