Egypt is exploring the possibility of hosting a Formula 1 Grand Prix as part of wider efforts to expand the country’s presence in international motorsport.
The proposal was discussed during a recent meeting between Egypt’s Ministry of Youth and Sports and representatives of the Automobile and Touring Club of Egypt, where officials reviewed plans for major international racing events and the future development of motorsport in the country.
Formula 1 Is Under Study — Not Confirmed Yet
While reports have generated excitement about the possibility of Formula 1 coming to Egypt, no race has been officially approved or added to the F1 calendar.
Raouf Gafaar, a board member of the Automobile and Touring Club of Egypt and head of its racing and rally committee, said the idea of hosting Formula 1 is being studied and would require major investment potentially reaching tens of millions of dollars.
Officials believe private investors and international financing groups could be interested if suitable land is secured and the project receives the necessary government support.
A final location has not been selected. Several potential sites are reportedly being considered, with technical and economic feasibility studies expected to determine which location would be capable of supporting a circuit built to international standards.
A Major Infrastructure Project
Hosting Formula 1 involves much more than constructing a racetrack.
Any Egyptian project would need to meet the FIA’s highest circuit standards while providing extensive infrastructure for teams, spectators, broadcasters and international visitors.
That means the feasibility process would need to consider transport links, hotels, safety requirements, logistics, communications infrastructure and the wider commercial viability of hosting one of the world’s biggest sporting events. Current reports indicate that technical, economic and logistical requirements are all part of the preliminary discussions.
The scale of the investment means the project remains a long-term ambition rather than an imminent addition to the calendar.
Egypt Is Also Planning Mille Miglia for 2027
One motorsport plan that appears further along is Egypt’s attempt to host the famous Mille Miglia, or “Thousand Mile” classic-car event.
Gafaar said the Automobile Club intends to bring the event to Egypt for the first time in 2027, with dozens of historic vehicles expected to arrive from European and Arab countries.
The Ministry of Youth and Sports has expressed support for the initiative, with coordination expected between the ministries of tourism, interior and finance to facilitate vehicle entry, security and other logistical requirements.
The event is also being viewed as an opportunity to promote sports tourism, as participants would spend several days travelling through Egypt and using local hotels and tourism services.
Growing Motorsport Ambitions in Egypt
The Formula 1 discussions form part of a broader effort to strengthen organised motorsport in Egypt.
During the meeting, officials discussed the regulatory relationship between the Automobile and Touring Club and the Ministry of Youth and Sports, as well as plans to increase participation in car and motorcycle racing and attract more international events.
Egypt currently lacks a permanent circuit capable of hosting a modern Formula 1 Grand Prix, meaning any serious bid would require significant development before negotiations with Formula 1 could reach an advanced stage.
Could Formula 1 Really Come to Egypt?
For now, the answer is possibly—but the project is still at an early stage.
There is no confirmed Egyptian Grand Prix, no official F1 agreement and no announced race date. The current discussions are focused on feasibility, investment, land and government support.
Formula 1’s calendar is also highly competitive. The championship continues to attract interest from countries around the world, while Turkey has already secured its return to the calendar from 2027 through 2031.
Still, the fact that Egyptian officials and the country’s Automobile Club are openly examining the possibility represents an important step for local motorsport.
If the required investment, infrastructure and international approvals eventually come together, Egypt could one day join the growing list of countries hosting one of global sport’s most watched events.
For now, Formula 1 in Egypt remains a vision under study—but one that is beginning to move from fan imagination into official discussion.
