El Adl Group Studios has announced a major new musical celebrating the life, music and enduring legacy of Egyptian icon Abdel Halim Hafez, with the production set to premiere in March 2027, marking 50 years since the legendary singer’s death.
Titled Halim: Zaman El Romancia, the large-scale musical production is being developed by El Adl Group Studios in cooperation with the New Administrative Capital Company, with details unveiled during a press conference at the City of Arts and Culture in the New Administrative Capital.
The project will revisit the journey of the singer affectionately known as El Andaleeb El Asmar, or “The Dark-Skinned Nightingale,” whose songs and films remain deeply embedded in Egyptian and Arab popular culture nearly five decades after his death.
‘Halim: Zaman El Romancia’ to Premiere in March 2027
Writer and producer Medhat El Adl confirmed that the musical is scheduled to open in March 2027, coinciding with the 50th anniversary of Abdel Halim Hafez’s death.
Abdel Halim died on March 30, 1977, in London following years of health complications. His music has nevertheless continued to attract generations of listeners, making him one of the most enduring stars in the history of Arab music.
El Adl revealed that he has already completed writing the production, although the exact venue has not yet been finalized. He confirmed that performances are expected to take place in the New Administrative Capital due to its partnership in the project.
Who Will Play Abdel Halim Hafez?
One of the biggest questions surrounding the production is the identity of the performer who will take on the role of Abdel Halim.
El Adl confirmed that casting for the lead role has not yet been finalized, explaining that the team is searching for a performer with both a strong singing voice and the charisma required to convey Abdel Halim’s presence onstage.
The production will not attempt to simply find an actor who physically resembles the late singer.
Instead, El Adl has said the goal is to capture Abdel Halim’s spirit, personality and influence, rather than create an exact visual imitation of him.
That approach could allow the musical to focus more heavily on the emotions, music and cultural atmosphere associated with Abdel Halim’s career.
Ahmed Fouad to Direct the Musical
Halim: Zaman El Romancia will be directed by Ahmed Fouad, marking his second musical theatre collaboration with El Adl Group.
Fouad previously worked with the company on Umm Kulthum: Daybeen Fi Sot El Set, another major stage production built around one of Egypt’s most influential musical legends.
According to El Adl, the decision to develop an Abdel Halim Hafez musical was influenced partly by the audience response to the Umm Kulthum production.
After performances of the Umm Kulthum musical, audiences repeatedly asked when a similar project celebrating Abdel Halim would be created, eventually helping inspire the new production.
Celebrating an Egyptian and Arab Music Icon
Abdel Halim Hafez remains one of the defining voices of 20th-century Arab music.
Songs including “Ahwak,” “Gana El Hawa,” “Zay El Hawa,” “Sawah,” “Qariat El Fingan” and “Ahlef Besamaha” helped establish a musical legacy that continues to reach audiences decades after his death.
His career also extended far beyond music. Abdel Halim appeared in some of Egyptian cinema’s best-known romantic films, including Abi Foq El Shagara, Maaboudat El Gamahir, El Khataya and Ayamna El Helwa.
El Adl has emphasized Abdel Halim’s continued popularity among younger listeners, noting that his recordings remain widely heard and commercially successful despite the decades that have passed since his death.
A Major Tribute 50 Years After His Death
With its planned March 2027 premiere, Halim: Zaman El Romancia is being positioned as more than a conventional biography.
The musical aims to recreate the world surrounding Abdel Halim Hafez while exploring the music, personality and romantic era with which his name became closely associated.
More details regarding the lead actor, supporting cast, venue, performance dates and ticketing are expected to be announced as production preparations continue.
