Shops and Restaurants to Return to Normal Hours during Coptic Celebrations

Egyptian authorities are moving to temporarily ease recently introduced early closing measures for shops, restaurants, and entertainment venues during the upcoming Coptic holiday week.

The decision follows the implementation of nationwide restrictions requiring businesses to close at 9 PM as part of a government plan to reduce electricity consumption amid rising global energy costs.

However, a high-level government committee has now recommended suspending these restrictions during the Coptic Christian celebrations, which run from Palm Sunday through Easter. The proposal is expected to be reviewed and finalized by the Cabinet.

Officials noted that the holiday period typically involves increased social gatherings, shopping activity, and late-night celebrations, making it necessary to temporarily return businesses to their normal operating hours.

The recommendation aims to strike a balance between ongoing energy-saving efforts and the economic and social needs of citizens during one of the most important religious occasions in Egypt.

The early closure policy was originally introduced as part of broader measures to manage energy consumption, driven by rising fuel costs and regional economic pressures.

If approved, the temporary suspension will allow commercial venues to operate more flexibly throughout the holiday week, before returning to the previously announced restrictions afterward.

The move reflects the government’s attempt to adapt its policies in response to both economic challenges and public needs, particularly during periods of high activity and cultural significance.
