Egypt and Saudi Arabia are set to develop their first jointly designed and manufactured satellite, marking a major milestone in scientific and technological cooperation between the two countries. The initiative was recently approved by the Saudi Cabinet during a session chaired by King Salman bin Abdulaziz in Jeddah.
The project will be carried out through collaboration between the Saudi Space Agency and the Egyptian Space Agency, with both sides working together across multiple stages of satellite development and operation. The partnership will focus on satellite manufacturing, operations, imaging capabilities, and the commercialisation of space technologies, with particular attention given to remote sensing and Earth observation applications.
The initiative builds on a memorandum of understanding signed by the two agencies in December 2023 to promote peaceful space activities and facilitate the exchange of technical expertise and knowledge.
For Egypt, the project represents another step forward in expanding its sovereign space programme, which has seen significant developments in recent years through missions such as MisrSat-2 and other scientific satellite initiatives. For Saudi Arabia, the partnership aligns with Vision 2030, which identifies space technologies, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and digital infrastructure as strategic sectors for future growth and economic diversification.
While technical specifications and launch timelines have yet to be announced, the joint satellite project highlights the growing momentum behind regional cooperation in advanced technologies and signals a new chapter in Arab collaboration in the space sector.
