Egypt experienced a massive surge in digital connectivity last year, adding 7.9 million new mobile internet users over the course of 2025.
The latest data, released by the National Telecom Regulatory Authority (NTRA), highlights the rapid acceleration of the country’s digital transformation and its shift toward a mobile-first society.
This significant growth keeps Egypt on track to build a thriving digital economy, positioning the telecommunications sector as a primary driver of national economic growth and sustainable development.
A Record High for Mobile Connectivity
The addition of nearly 8 million new mobile web users has pushed Egypt’s total connectivity figures to unprecedented levels.
According to the Information and Decision Support Center (IDSC), total mobile internet subscriptions in Egypt reached a staggering 92.6 million by December 2025.
This means that mobile internet users now account for approximately 75.3% of all mobile subscribers in the country. Alongside this growth in users, the NTRA reported that overall mobile data consumption increased by 12% year-on-year, reflecting deeper, more consistent daily internet usage among citizens.
Shifting Patterns in Digital Consumption
The surge in mobile internet adoption is directly influencing how Egyptians work, learn, and communicate. The NTRA data revealed significant shifts in daily online behavior:
- Remote Work & Learning: Digital platforms facilitating remote work and education reached 6.5 million active users in 2025.
- Live Streaming: The creator economy boomed, with 13,300 content creators producing roughly 4,600 hours of live video per day.
- Digital Communication: Email services recorded 16 million users sending approximately 14.2 million messages daily, marking a 12% increase in usage.
These metrics prove that digital media is no longer just a source of entertainment, but a fully integrated system reshaping daily business and social interactions.
Infrastructure Upgrades Driving the Growth
Egypt’s ability to handle this massive influx of internet users is the direct result of multi-billion-dollar investments in national telecommunications infrastructure.
The Ministry of Communications and Information Technology has focused heavily on upgrading network capacities. By the end of 2025, average mobile download speeds in Egypt reached approximately 56.45 megabits per second (Mbps).
Fixed broadband also saw impressive gains. Subscriptions rose from 11.6 million in 2024 to 12.7 million by December 2025, with average fixed internet speeds hitting 89.84 Mbps.
The Dominance of Social Media
As mobile access expands, social media platforms remain the primary destination for Egyptian internet users.
By the end of 2025, social media penetration reached 43.4% of the total population. The landscape remains highly competitive among the top platforms:
- Facebook: The leading network with 51.6 million users.
- YouTube: A close second with 49.3 million active viewers.
- TikTok: Rapidly closing the gap with 48.8 million users.
A Step Toward a Digital Economy
The continuous expansion of mobile internet access is a cornerstone of the state’s comprehensive “Digital Egypt” strategy.
To support this domestic growth, the government is heavily incentivizing local technology manufacturing. In 2025 alone, more than 10 million mobile devices were produced locally within Egypt, drastically up from 3.3 million devices the previous year.
While the addition of 7.9 million new users is a major milestone, the Ministry of Communications continues to target further expansion. By prioritizing the deployment of fiber optic networks and expanding mobile tower coverage in underserved villages, Egypt is ensuring that its rapidly growing digital economy leaves no citizen offline.
