Egypt has increased service frequency on the East Nile Monorail, reducing the interval between trains from 12 minutes to just 9 minutes as preparations continue for higher passenger demand during the 2026/2027 academic year.
Transport Minister Kamel El-Wazir directed the National Authority for Tunnels to implement the shorter headway from September 14 following an inspection of the monorail’s operations, stations and passenger services.
East Nile Monorail Trains Now Arrive Every 9 Minutes
The new timetable cuts the gap between East Nile Monorail trains by three minutes, meaning passengers should see more frequent services throughout operating hours.
The move is intended to help the system handle increased demand as schools and universities begin the new academic year, particularly during peak commuting periods.
The Transport Ministry has also instructed operators to maintain regular schedules, increase capacity when necessary and ensure emergency and safety teams remain prepared throughout daily operations.
East Nile Monorail Operates 142 Daily Trips
The East Nile Monorail is scheduled to run 142 trips every day.
The full line connects Cairo Stadium in Nasr City with Justice City in the New Administrative Capital, serving 22 stations along the route.
The 56.5-kilometer electric monorail connects key areas of Nasr City, New Cairo and the New Capital and is designed to offer commuters an alternative to road-based transportation.
The system also integrates with the Light Rail Transit at Arts and Culture City Station, while further connections with Cairo Metro lines are planned.
Students Get 60% Discount on Monorail Subscriptions
The shorter waiting time comes alongside another major update for students.
The Ministry of Transport has introduced a 60% discount on student subscriptions for both the East Nile Monorail and the Light Rail Transit, with the discounted passes taking effect from September 16.
Subscription offices are available at ticket windows across East Nile Monorail stations during operating hours.
The student discount and increased train frequency are both part of preparations for the expected rise in daily passengers during the new school and university year.
Egypt Expands Its Electric Public Transport Network
The East Nile Monorail began carrying passengers in 2026 and forms part of Egypt’s wider expansion of electric and environmentally friendly public transportation.
The project is designed to connect Cairo with rapidly growing areas in New Cairo and the New Administrative Capital while helping reduce road congestion and dependence on private vehicles.
With trains now arriving every nine minutes and discounted student subscriptions available, authorities are aiming to make the East Nile Monorail more convenient for daily commuters during the new academic year.
