Ticket prices for metro and railway services across Egypt have been raised, impacting commuters using both Egyptian National Railways and Cairo Metro lines one, two, and three.
The new pricing structure includes varying increases depending on travel distance. For railway services, fares for long-distance journeys have risen by 12.5%, while short-distance trips have seen a larger increase of 25%.
Changes have also been applied to Cairo Metro fares. Tickets for journeys covering up to nine stations have increased from EGP 8 to EGP 10, while trips of up to 16 stations now cost EGP 12 instead of EGP 10. However, fares for longer distances remain unchanged, with journeys of up to 23 stations continuing at EGP 15, and trips exceeding 23 stations and up to 39 stations still priced at EGP 20.
Officials attributed the fare adjustments to rising operational costs, including higher fuel prices, maintenance expenses, and increases in employee wages.
The changes reflect ongoing efforts to balance service sustainability with increasing economic pressures on public transport systems.
