Egypt to Establish Three New Bone Marrow Transplant Units

Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population is preparing to establish three new bone marrow transplant units as part of its medical investment plan for the 2026/2027 fiscal year.

The expansion is part of a broader national initiative to enhance specialized medical care, reduce patient waiting lists, and improve accessibility to life-saving treatments across the country.

The directive was issued by Dr. Khaled Abdel Ghaffar, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Health and Population, during a recent meeting to review ongoing projects under the Secretariat of Specialized Medical Centers.

Expanding Specialized Healthcare Services

The addition of the three new units marks a significant step forward in Egypt’s efforts to localize complex medical treatments.

Initial reports from the Therapeutic Foundation indicate that the state has already begun preparations, with one unit planned for Heliopolis Hospital and another at Mabaret Misr El-Kadima Hospital.

By strategically placing these centers within established medical facilities, the government aims to leverage existing medical expertise and infrastructure to accelerate the delivery of these critical services.

Reducing Patient Waiting Lists

Bone marrow transplants are complex and highly specialized procedures essential for treating severe blood disorders, immune deficiencies, and various types of cancer.

Historically, limited capacity across the country has forced many eligible patients to endure long wait times, which can severely impact their health outcomes.

The new units are specifically designed to alleviate the immense pressure on existing healthcare facilities, ensuring that more citizens receive timely interventions through state-sponsored health programs and insurance.

A Broader National Investment Plan

The new bone marrow transplant units are just one component of a massive healthcare infrastructure upgrade currently underway in Egypt.

During his meeting, Dr. Abdel Ghaffar also reviewed the progress of 35 additional medical projects currently being executed across 13 governorates.

These projects are part of a wider plan to increase overall hospital capacity, introduce advanced medical technology, and expand specialized departments such as oncology, cardiology, and hematology.

Strengthening Egypt’s Medical Infrastructure

To guarantee the success of the new units, the Ministry of Health has prioritized the rapid procurement of necessary medical equipment and the specialized training of medical cadres.

Dr. Abdel Ghaffar explicitly directed health officials to expedite the preparation phase, emphasizing that expanding specialized care is a top priority for the national health agenda.

As Egypt continues to execute its comprehensive 2026/2027 health investment plan, the establishment of these units reflects a growing commitment to addressing advanced medical needs domestically. By scaling up the country’s capacity for complex surgeries, the healthcare system is building a more resilient infrastructure capable of serving its most vulnerable patients.
