Egyptian actress Mona Zaki will receive the Career Achievement Award at the ninth edition of the El Gouna Film Festival (GFF).
The prestigious honor celebrates her extensive contributions to Egyptian and Arab cinema, television, and theater over a career spanning more than three decades.
The announcement positions Zaki as a central figure in this year’s festival, recognizing an artistic journey defined by remarkable performances and a lasting impact on the regional filmmaking industry.
Honoring a Legacy of Versatility
The El Gouna Film Festival emphasized that Zaki’s career has been driven by artistic curiosity and a continuous desire to explore diverse perspectives.
According to the festival’s organizers, her artistic choices extend beyond simply playing different roles to deeply exploring the human aspects of each character.
Having begun her career on stage before transitioning to the screen, Zaki has consistently sought out new challenges that reveal different facets of her acting abilities.
This dedication to her craft has cemented her status as one of the most recognizable and influential stars in the Arab world.
Anticipated Return to the Big Screen
The award arrives as Zaki prepares for one of the most ambitious cinematic roles of her career.
In her upcoming project, “El Set,” she will portray the legendary Egyptian singer Umm Kulthum, widely known as the “Star of the East”.
The biographical film is written by Ahmed Mourad and directed by Marwan Hamed, featuring a star-studded cast that includes Sayed Ragab, Amr Saad, and Ahmed Khaled Saleh.
Zaki is also set to return to television drama with the upcoming series “Tale’ Nazel,” directed by Hany Khalifa and expected to premiere outside the traditional Ramadan season.
Building on Recent Critical Success
These new projects follow her widely acclaimed television performance in the 2023 Ramadan series “Under Guardianship” (Taht El Wesaya).
In the drama, Zaki portrayed Hanan, a widowed mother fighting challenging circumstances to provide for her family and secure her children’s rights.
The hit series dominated regional conversations and further proved her ability to anchor socially relevant, deeply emotional narratives.
Engaging with the Industry at CineGouna
Zaki’s involvement in the ninth edition of GFF will extend beyond the awards stage.
She is scheduled to deliver an exclusive masterclass as part of the CineGouna Forum, the festival’s industry-focused platform.
Her session will be one of approximately 35 engagements at the forum, which will tackle pressing industry topics such as the impact of artificial intelligence on cinema, gender dynamics at the box office, and the art of storytelling.
This masterclass will offer emerging filmmakers and actors a rare opportunity to learn directly from her decades of on-set experience.
A Growing Platform for Regional Cinema
The tribute to Zaki aligns with El Gouna Film Festival’s broader mission to champion creative talent and foster cultural exchange.
This year, the festival has selected more than 80 narrative, documentary, and short films from around the world to offer attendees a diverse range of cinematic voices.
As GFF approaches its milestone next year, the event continues to give filmmakers a crucial platform for financing, distribution, and visibility.
By honoring an icon like Mona Zaki while simultaneously supporting emerging creators, the festival reinforces its role as a vital cornerstone of the Middle Eastern arts and culture ecosystem.
