Cairo Airport Customs Foil Major Marijuana Seed Smuggling Attempt
Customs authorities at Cairo International Airport have successfully intercepted a significant attempt to smuggle a large quantity of marijuana seeds into Egypt, in what officials described as an unprecedented seizure.
The incident occurred during routine inspection procedures for passengers arriving on an EgyptAir flight from Brussels. A customs officer became suspicious of a passenger of Arab nationality while he attempted to pass through the green channel, which is designated for travelers with no items to declare.
The passenger’s luggage was subjected to X-ray screening, where customs officials confirmed their suspicions after detecting irregular contents inside the bags. A detailed inspection was then carried out, both on the luggage and the passenger.
Authorities discovered multiple concealed packages hidden within the lining and compartments of the suitcase. The items had been carefully wrapped in carbon materials in an apparent attempt to evade detection by scanning the devices.
Upon further examination, the packages were found to contain approximately 7.5 kilograms of marijuana seeds — estimated to exceed 400,000 individual seeds. Officials noted that the quantity is highly significant, particularly given that each seed has the potential to produce a full plant.
The seizure was carried out by a coordinated customs team under the supervision of senior officials, who also oversaw the documentation and securing of the confiscated materials.
Following the discovery, legal procedures were initiated against the suspect. The case was referred to the competent prosecution authority, and the Public Prosecution ordered the suspect to be detained for four days pending further investigation. Authorities have also issued orders to identify and apprehend other individuals potentially involved in the smuggling operation.
Officials emphasized that the operation reflects ongoing coordination between airport customs and the General Administration for Drug Control. This collaboration aims to dismantle smuggling networks both Egypt and internationally, particularly in light of increased trafficking attempts in recent months.
The case highlights intensified efforts by Egyptian authorities to combat drug smuggling and strengthen border security measures amid growing challenges posed by organized trafficking operations.
