Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin in Egypt on Monday, February 8, according to astronomical calculations for the Islamic year 1448 AH.
Egypt’s National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics has projected February 8 as the first fasting day of the holy month, placing Ramadan significantly earlier in the calendar than in recent years.
The date remains an astronomical prediction for now, with the official beginning of Ramadan to be determined by Egypt’s Dar Al-Ifta following the traditional sighting of the crescent moon.
Ramadan 2027 Expected to Start on February 8
Astronomical calculations indicate that Sunday, February 7, 2027, will complete the month of Sha’ban, with Ramadan beginning the following day.
According to researchers at the National Research Institute of Astronomy and Geophysics, the new Ramadan crescent will be born following the astronomical conjunction on Saturday, February 6.
The calculations therefore place the first day of Ramadan on Monday, February 8.
The International Astronomical Center’s projected Hijri calendar also places the beginning of Ramadan 1448 AH on February 8 across both its eastern and western regions.
The Final Date Will Be Confirmed by Dar Al-Ifta
Although astronomical calculations can predict the beginning of lunar months with high precision, Egypt’s official Ramadan announcement follows a religious crescent-sighting process.
Dar Al-Ifta has explained that the beginning of Ramadan is determined through the sighting of the new moon after sunset on the 29th day of Sha’ban.
If the crescent is sighted, Ramadan begins the following day. If it is not sighted, Sha’ban is completed as a 30-day month.
Astronomical calculations are used alongside the sighting process, particularly to determine whether seeing the crescent is scientifically possible.
That means Egyptians should consider February 8 the expected date, rather than the officially confirmed start of Ramadan, until Dar Al-Ifta issues its announcement closer to the holy month.
Ramadan Is Moving Earlier Every Year
The Islamic calendar is based on lunar cycles and contains approximately 354 or 355 days, making it around 10 to 11 days shorter than the Gregorian calendar.
As a result, Ramadan moves earlier each year.
Ramadan 2026 began in Egypt in February, while the expected February 8 start in 2027 will move the holy month even further into the winter season.
For people fasting in Egypt, that generally means shorter daylight hours compared with years when Ramadan fell during spring or summer.
How Long Could Fasting Last in Cairo?
Preliminary Ramadan timetables based on the February 8 prediction suggest that Cairo residents could begin the month with fasting periods of around 12 hours and 25 minutes.
On the projected first day of Ramadan, Fajr is expected at approximately 5:13 AM, with Maghrib around 5:38 PM in Cairo.
As the month progresses, daylight hours will gradually increase, with fasting periods becoming slightly longer toward the end of Ramadan.
These prayer and fasting times remain preliminary and can be adjusted closer to the date.
When Could Ramadan 2027 End?
If Ramadan begins on February 8, the holy month would run through most of February and into early March.
Because Islamic lunar months last either 29 or 30 days, the exact final day will depend on the sighting of the Shawwal crescent.
Current astronomical calendars place the end of Ramadan around March 8, with Eid Al-Fitr expected around March 9, 2027, although those dates will also require official confirmation.
Just as with the beginning of Ramadan, Dar Al-Ifta will conduct the relevant crescent sighting before officially announcing the first day of Eid.
Ramadan 2027 Arrives in the Heart of Winter
The expected February start means Ramadan 2027 will once again fall during Egypt’s cooler season.
That could make fasting conditions considerably different from years when Ramadan occurred during the hotter and longer days of spring and summer.
With the month expected to begin on February 8, preparations for Ramadan will also begin earlier in the year, from television and advertising campaigns to decorations, food preparations and the return of Ramadan lanterns across Egyptian streets.
For now, Monday, February 8, 2027 is the astronomically expected first day of Ramadan in Egypt, while the official date will be announced by Dar Al-Ifta after the crescent sighting closer to the start of the holy month.
