Egyptian fencing star Mohamed El-Sayed secured another medal for Egypt after advancing to the semifinals of the men’s individual épée event at the Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games in Italy.
The Olympic bronze medalist booked his place in the final four following a dominant 15–6 victory over Italy’s Valerio Cuomo in the quarterfinals, continuing his impressive run in the competition.
El-Sayed’s qualification for the semifinals guaranteed him a place on the podium, adding another medal to Egypt’s growing tally at the Mediterranean Games.
Dominant Victory Over Valerio Cuomo
El-Sayed produced an impressive performance against home favorite Valerio Cuomo, controlling the quarterfinal bout and eventually sealing a convincing 15–6 victory.
The result sent the Egyptian into the semifinals and kept his hopes of winning the Mediterranean Games gold medal alive.
Earlier in the competition, El-Sayed successfully navigated the opening stages before overcoming another Italian opponent, Filippo Armaleo, 12–11 in a closely contested bout.
Another Medal for Egypt in Taranto
By reaching the semifinals, El-Sayed ensured that Egypt would add another fencing medal to its collection at Taranto 2026.
The achievement continued a successful period for the 23-year-old, who entered the Mediterranean Games as one of Egypt’s leading medal contenders following his rise among the world’s top épée fencers.
El-Sayed famously won the bronze medal in the men’s individual épée at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, becoming one of the standout Egyptian athletes of the competition.
He also entered Taranto as the defending Mediterranean Games champion, having won gold in the same event at Oran 2022.
El-Sayed Keeps Gold Medal Hopes Alive
Securing a medal was only part of El-Sayed’s objective in Taranto, with the Egyptian continuing his campaign in pursuit of a place in the final and another Mediterranean Games title.
His commanding quarterfinal performance further strengthened Egypt’s presence in the fencing competition and added another guaranteed podium finish for the Egyptian delegation.
