Egyptian international defender Hossam Abdelmaguid has completed a move from Zamalek to Bulgarian side Ludogorets, beginning the first European chapter of his professional career.
Ludogorets officially announced the signing on July 18 after the 25-year-old successfully completed his medical examinations and fitness tests. The club did not publicly disclose the length of his contract or the transfer fee in its announcement.
The move comes shortly after Abdelmaguid represented Egypt at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he played a role in the Pharaohs’ historic run to the Round of 16.
A Memorable World Cup Campaign
Abdelmaguid featured in Egypt’s group-stage victory over New Zealand before appearing against Australia in the Round of 32.
With the match decided by a penalty shootout, the centre-back converted Egypt’s winning spot kick to secure the country’s first-ever victory in a World Cup knockout match. Egypt’s campaign later ended with a 3–2 defeat to defending champions Argentina in the Round of 16.
His performances on the international stage added to his growing reputation as one of Egypt’s leading young defenders and provided a high-profile conclusion to his years at Zamalek.
Abdelmaguid Leaves Zamalek After 171 Appearances
A graduate of Zamalek’s youth academy, Abdelmaguid spent his entire senior club career with the Cairo side before completing his move to Bulgaria.
He made 171 appearances across all competitions for the White Knights, scoring 15 goals. During that period, he developed from an academy prospect into a senior international and one of the leaders within the Zamalek squad.
His honors with the club include three Egyptian Premier League titles, two Egypt Cups, the CAF Confederation Cup and the CAF Super Cup.
Standing at 1.93 metres, Abdelmaguid is known for his physical presence, aerial ability and composure in possession. Ludogorets also highlighted his leadership qualities, describing him as a player expected to add greater stability to the team’s defence.
A New Challenge in Bulgarian Football
Abdelmaguid joins one of Bulgaria’s most successful modern clubs. Ludogorets have won the Bulgarian league 14 times and regularly compete in European club competitions.
The transfer offers the Egyptian defender an opportunity to gain experience in European football while competing for domestic trophies and places in UEFA tournaments.
Ludogorets confirmed that Abdelmaguid would take a short break following his World Cup participation before joining the squad’s training at the end of July. The club said it would complete the remaining registration and administrative procedures during that period.
Another Egyptian Talent Heads Abroad
Abdelmaguid made his senior Egypt debut in 2023 and has since earned 15 international appearances. His move follows a campaign in which he strengthened his position within the national team and performed on football’s biggest international stage.
For the defender, the transfer represents a major career step after six years in Zamalek’s senior team. For Egyptian football, it places another homegrown player in Europe at a time when Abdelmaguid is entering the prime years of his career.
